The Health Officers Association of California (HOAC) is a membership organization representing the physician health officers in California’s city and county jurisdictions. We provide public health-focused Continuing Medical Education for physicians, provide technical expertise to the state legislature on matters related to public health, engage in advocacy, and conduct other special projects to advance public health. 

Physician Counseling Services

With the increasing stress and pressure physicians and medical students are facing, the Health Officers Association of California (HOAC) is committed to providing access to competent, convenient, and cost-free professional counseling. HOAC will sponsor up to six wellness sessions with vetted psychologists and/or life coaches for all California Health Officers.


To schedule an appointment, contact a Vetted Provider directly, and let them know that you are accessing the Joy of Medicine Program and are a member of HOAC.


**Any late cancellations or missed appointments are the financial responsibility of the physician.


If you are having trouble getting in touch with a provider or getting an appointment, report issues anonymously here. 

Counseling Options

Counseling looks different to everyone. Below are just some of the options.

Physicians are eligible for up to six (6) life time sessions with a vetted provider.

3-4 Sessions

You might be going through a transition at work or home and want to prepare for the challenges ahead.

Life Prioritizing/Organizing

4-5 Sessions

It's been awhile since you sat down and did some organizing and planning in your life. Set yourself up for a great year of success. 

Self-Discovery/Trauma

6+ Sessions

There is more to uncover and you are interested in getting to the root. Consider continuing your sessions after the sponsored six. 

Client must pay out of pocket or through insurance for counseling exceeding six (6) life time sessions.
